‘Chiyu’ Ring—Healing, Sustainability,
and Transformative Design

Norwegian jewellery house Tom Wood has once again redefined the intersection of art and purpose with its latest collaboration, Chiyu (治癒 —ちゆ )—a Japanese term meaning “healing”. Teaming up with Tokyo-based fashion insider Kozue Akimoto (秋元 梢), Creative Director Mona Jensen crafts a duo of rings that transcend adornment, embodying resilience, renewal, and the quiet strength of human connection.

THE STORY OF CHIYU
From Injury to Inspiration

Born from a serendipitous moment in Tokyo, the Chiyu rings trace their origins to Akimoto’s broken finger and the cast that became a catalyst for creativity. “The idea emerged from healing physical pain, but it grew into something deeper—regeneration, renewal, and the beauty of improving what’s old”, explains Akimoto. This ethos is etched into the design: two sleek, interlocking bands in recycled sterling silver, crafted to be worn as layered “armour” or standalone pieces. Their adjustable sizing system allows wearers to style them anywhere on the finger, creating a bespoke silhouette that adapts to personal expression.

DESIGN AS ARMOURProtection with Purpose

Mona Jensen, Tom Wood’s founder, drew on silver’s historical symbolism as a guardian against harm. “I wanted these rings to feel like protective talismans”, she shares. “The challenge was balancing simplicity with versatility. We reimagined sizing so they could be stacked, shifted, or worn solo—each configuration tells a different story”. The result is a study in functional elegance: sharp lines softened by organic curves, reflecting both Scandinavian precision and the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi (侘び寂び), meaning beauty in imperfection.

SUSTAINABILITYWoven into Every Layer

True to Tom Wood’s ethos, responsibility anchors the Chiyu collection. The rings are cast in 100% recycled sterling silver, slashing their carbon footprint by over 90% compared to virgin materials. As a Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC)-certified brand, Tom Wood ensures ethical sourcing and production, partnering exclusively with RJC-approved manufacturers. “Sustainability isn’t a trend—it’s our legacy”, Jensen emphasises.

COLLABORATION
A Forged in Friendship

More than a meeting of minds, Chiyu celebrates a decade-long bond between Jensen and Akimoto. Their shared vision—transformative design that marries meaning with wearability—resonates in every curve. “This isn’t just jewellery; it’s a dialogue between cultures and lifetimes”, says Akimoto. From Tokyo’s neon-lit streets to Oslo’s minimalist landscapes, the collection bridges worlds, inviting wearers to find strength in renewal.
