HERMAN MA
founder of Hong Kong-based perfume brand BLACK FADES, is redefining the fragrance industry with his architectural approach to scent design. Merging tradition with innovation, the creations transcend mere pleasant aromas, offering functional fragrances designed to evoke profound emotions and foster self-discovery.
Herman’s foray into olfactory artistry began with a serendipitous encounter with a captivating scent, igniting a passion that led him to immerse himself in perfumery studies. After honing his craft with several established brands, he launched BLACK FADES with the aim of challenging negative associations with the colour black and channelling positive energy through scent.
Each BLACK FADES fragrance is thoughtfully named after a Chinese character, tapping into the multifaceted layers of Cantonese culture. The scent 若 (yeuk6), for instance, combines rose and mint not only for their skin-moisturising properties but also to embody concepts of self-love and appreciation for life's beauty.
Herman’s architectural background is evident in BLACK FADES’ minimalist packaging, which earned a Top Design accolade at the 2023 European Product Design Award. The cube designs represent humans, cities, and communities, reflecting urban interconnectedness and structure.
With its innovative approach to fragrance creation, deep cultural roots, and meticulous design philosophy, BLACK FADES is carving a distinct niche in the evolving world of perfumery. As the brand continues to challenge conventions and redefine the role of scent in personal identity, it stands as one to watch in the global fragrance landscape.
